1925 Underwood clean and rehab

My brother got me this Underwood typewriter for Christmas last year. It sat on my workbench until this Christmas.

It didn’t type, but I figured it was dirty and needed some cleaning. A bit of W-40 later and it typed.

It’s really dirty. I don’t want to get it pristine, but I’d like it to shine a bit.

I’ve been slowly taking it apart and cleaning up the parts. Most of it is water with a little dishsoap and a rag. That gets most of the gunk off. I’ve also got some very fine steel wool and a very fine sanding block to take off grime that soap won’t. I also invested in a bunch of felt polishing wheels for my Dremel.

The next tools I need to invest in are some gunsmithing screwdrivers. Screwdrivers with traditional angled heads will damage screw heads. Do no harm is the watchword. Right now, a bladed head on one of my multitools is working pretty okay.
