Face plate off

Big step forward in cleaning up the 1925 Underwood 5. The face plate was held in place by a stubborn, stuck little nut with very limited access. Got the nut unstuck tonight with a thing Tyler and lifted the face plate away to expose the key housing, which is super cruddy, and the rusted plate that holds up the ribbon guides.

Quick technical notes: standard angle head screwdrivers don’t fit typewriter nuts very well, so it’s already to strip them. You need gunsmithing screwdrivers, also called hollow points. I don’t have those and they are expensive.

This was a big step. The face plate was holding up a good deep cleaning of the interior and polishing up some of the external steel parts. Plus, I can also clean up the faceplate better.
